We’ve heard a lot about heroes lately: frontline workers, teachers, police, military, even the person working tirelessly to restock the grocery shelves this spring. I am certainly grateful to these amazing people who kept us safe during very scary times, but I also know ANYONE can be a hero and many go unrecognized. Among other definitions, Merriam-Webster defines a hero as “a person admired for achievements and noble qualities,” “one who shows great courage, and “an object of extreme admiration and devotion: IDOL.”
Right now, my hero is my sister, Rep. Katie Porter (CA-45). She is finishing up her first term in U.S. Congress. A victim of domestic violence by her ex-husband and mother of 3 children, she has in under 2 years, made a reputation for holding people accountable, whether that be expecting the Postmaster General to know what it costs to mail a postcard or getting the Director of the CDC to agree that all Americans can get COVID testing without worrying about the cost. She flies back and forth between DC and California and holds town halls almost weekly so that her constituents know they are heard. Yet she still manages to be her kids’ Scout leader, runs her kids to tennis and swim team, throws epic birthday parties, has over 500 children’s books in her library, and makes me so proud to be her sister every day.
